Population and nationalities

About 35% of the republic's population lives in Abakan. The population is slowly but steadily growing. As a percentage

• 79 % — Russian;
• 11 % — Khakass;
• 1% — Ukrainians;
• 0.8% — Germans;
• 0.8% — Kyrgyz;
• and representatives of other nationalities.

Because of the ethnic, and therefore cultural diversity, one can meet representatives of Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. There are relevant religious communities in Abakan, temples, pagodas, and mosques. At the same time, traditional beliefs continue to exist: shamanism and the cult of ancestors.

Geography and nature

Urban areas are located along the mouth of the Abakan River, which further downstream flows into the Yenisei. The city is located in the center of the Asian continent, in the southern part of Siberia, in the Minusinsk basin, which is surrounded by the mountains of the Kuznetsk Alatau. 

Climate

It is sharply continental with large daily temperature fluctuations throughout the year.

The climatic winter begins in November and ends in March. Summer is quite warm, the hottest month is July with an average temperature of +19.9 °C. Sometimes there are periods of heat. In some years, on the contrary, snow may fall in the summer months.

Tourism

Abakan is hardly a popular tourist destination, but it is the starting point for traveling around the Republic of Khakassia. People come here to study the culture of nomadic peoples and local nature. There is a ski resort in the region.

The main attractions include the surroundings of Abakan:

• The Kazanovka Museum-Reserve, spread over 18 hectares of land. It includes years and rivers, steppes and taiga. There are also ancient rock carvings here.
• The specially protected natural area of "Oglakhty". There are thousands of rock carvings, a cluster of several hundred mounds and other archaeological and historical monuments on the territory.
• Ust-Sos is an open—air museum with an ancient stone statue from the Bronze Age.
• The "Valley of the Kings" is considered a sacred place, because the Scythian lords are buried here. Archaeologists have found 56 mounds within a radius of 5 kilometers.

The history of the region has a thousand-year history, it is believed that a reasonable man appeared in the Khakass steppes 35 thousand years ago. One of the oldest discovered rock paintings, called the "White Horse", was left about 18 thousand years ago.

Where to work

Industry is well developed in Abakan and the surrounding area.Among the largest companies:

• The brewery of PJSC "Ayan".
• Shoe factory of PJSC "Sayan-footwear".
• Agro-industrial company "MaVR".

There are semi-finished products, building materials, a large-panel house building plant, and a timber processing plant.

Transport links

Railway. Abakan is connected with Moscow, Novokuznetsk and other cities of Russia. As of July 2024, from the regular routes: "Abakan — Moscow", "Abakan — Krasnoyarsk".

Highways. The federal highway R257 "Yenisei" and the regional highway 95K-002 "Abakan — Ak-Dovurak" provide.

Air service. Planes fly from Abakan to Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk.

Is it worth moving to Abakan

The city is developing dynamically, there are enough jobs, new residential complexes are being built. People from more northern regions of the country are actively moving to Abakan. The urban and social infrastructure is well developed here. Locals appreciate the proximity to nature, are actively engaged in hiking and other sports.

Abakan can be called a unique city, isolated from the rest of Russia. It has its own social, cultural and psychological microclimate.
