Stavropol is the administrative center of the Stavropol Territory of the Russian Federation. One of the largest cities in the North Caucasus and the North Caucasian Federal District. Stavropol is located on hills and ravines in the central part of Ciscaucasia on the Stavropol Upland, in the upper reaches of the Tashla River. It is located 1450 km south of Moscow. A feature of the city is that the forests adjoin closely to urban development. The area of green spaces is 4494 hectares.
According to the results of the All-Russian competition held in 2013, 2015 and 2016 for the title of "The most comfortable urban (rural) settlement in Russia", Stavropol took first place in the category "Urban settlements (urban districts), which are the administrative centers (capitals) of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
Founded in 1777. It received city status in 1785.
Until 1935 it was called Stavropol-Kavkazsky, from 1935 to 1943 Voroshilovsk.
