It was founded as a Crimean village in 1862.
The city is located on the banks of the Adagum River (the left tributary of the Kuban), in the foothills of the northwestern part of the Main Caucasian Range. It is located 102 km south-west of Krasnodar and 53 km north-east of Novorossiysk.
