The architecturally unusual village of New Lanark is located in the United Kingdom. Its main feature is that it is one huge factory, residential areas, schools and other social facilities organically fit around textile production. The creation of this creation was the English Utopian philosopher Robert Owen.
The village became a living embodiment of his theory of paternalism in industry. Owen wanted to create and created an ideal utopian society, cleansed of crime and poverty. Unfortunately, New Lanark became his only successful social project.
The history of the industrial village of New Lanark
The village of New Lanark was founded in the XVIII century, surrounded by a picturesque Scottish landscape. Its austere buildings are surrounded by greenery of trees and shrubs. The waterfalls of the Clyde River are located near the village. This place is ideal for work and leisure.
At that time, factory settlements looked like this: residential buildings-barracks, devoid of any household amenities, were built around the city-forming enterprise. Owen's layout was innovative – in the center of the town there was a park with a residential area designed for 2,500 residents. Also in the center there are public spaces, school and institute buildings, and behind them industrial and agricultural production.
Separately, it is worth allocating living quarters for workers and their families. In the village, the traditional barracks were replaced by spacious housing. The example of utopian socialism has made more than one family happy. Income from textile production was directed not only to the further development of the enterprise, but also to improving the quality of life of employees.
What's with the village now
In 1974, a charitable organization called the New Lanark Conservation Trust was founded. The buildings of the settlement were restored with the funds raised by the organization. In 2001, the factory village of New Lanark, designed by Robert Owen, was included in the list of protected UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
There are currently 180 people living in New Lanark. The village has become a unique tourist destination. An exhibition center and a cozy hotel have been built, which receives more than 400 thousand visitors a year.
The list of attractions in New Lanark has been expanded: the school building has been restored, and an amusement ride with special effects has been organized. Perhaps, already during your trip, the residents of the town will be pleased with something new.
