Climate
Most of Austria is located in a cool, temperate climate zone. Humid westerly winds prevail. Almost three quarters of the country is located in the Alps, where the Alpine climate prevails. In the east — in the Pannonian lowland and in the Danube Valley — the climate is continental in nature with less precipitation than in alpine areas.
Although it is cold in Austria in winter (from -10 to 0°C), the average summer temperature is +20°C, the maximum recorded value is +40.5°C (August 2013).
Language
Standard Austrian German is spoken in Austria. It is used in education, publications, websites, and television. It is identical to the standard German of Germany, but with some differences in vocabulary. However, the generally accepted spoken language in Austria is not standard German, which is taught in schools, but Bavarian-Austrian — High German.
